The Game's Rolling Dodge Deserves Praise

If you've played this acclaimed title, or nearly any 3D action game, you're probably familiar with the wonderful mechanic known as the “evasion roll.” This evasion technique lets your avatar to perform a front, lateral, or rearward tumble to dodge all incoming damage and create distance from the bad guy. Seems useful, right?

The dodge roll, though, has gotten a lot of flak, and not just because of the rolling; it's been called unintelligent, a cheap tactic, and an unbelievable technique — and in some cases, I agree. Just imagine me rolling around hostile mobs in a well-known fantasy game — can't touch this Geralt! But this game's rolling dodge stands as the roll to surpass every other rolling dodges, and I'll tell you why.

For this particular game, the creators discovered an excellent method to address all opinions suggesting the technique is overly simple: just grant all foes unreasonable strength, triple that, and each player character who approaches them will appreciate deeply for their dodge-roll ability, me included. Given the intense difficulty, pulling off a perfect dodge feels like an achievement, rather than a cheap trick.

No different defensive move in this RPG matches this sense of satisfaction and dependability, as quick dashes don't cover much ground and defensive postures are easily broken by strong enemies. Someone once recommended leaping as the primary Elden Ring evasion method, but besides failing to offer optimal placement, It wasn't clear to me taking a crushing hit would improve my chances of overcoming challenges (lack of skill, maybe).

Perfecting the Skill

While the rolling dodge offers respite in an incredibly challenging experience, it isn't without skill. To begin with, the game's evasion move merely initiates a window of invulnerability once you release the evasion key, which prevents a rapid, fearful withdrawal from dangerous scenarios. Moreover, although it may move you aside from enemies, it's much better to utilize it as a moment to move nearer, ideally to their rear, and deliver attacks. In conclusion, you must still understand and anticipate enemy attacks, because rolling prematurely of a prolonged preparation might terminate your protection ahead of the attack striking… causing significant harm.

A Balanced Mechanic

While dodge-rolling in quick succession might seem rather absurd (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't really an option in this title. Of course, that doesn't render it a believable combat move — which is precisely why it would be terrifying to witness it in a title like a historical simulation — but this is a spectacular magical game being considered, so who cares?

Similar to any respectable dodge roll, Elden Ring's rolling animation is spruced up with a small acrobatic jump at the start, providing a dynamic sensation as opposed to plopping the player downward. According to your loadout, the technique may seem incredibly quick or moderately cumbersome, yet it's always faster and more fluid than the dodge rolls featured in the earlier games. True, you could plant your large weapon on the floor if you're carrying one, but that's on you for avoiding alternative arms (In jest — don't play Elden Ring with projectile weapons).

Ideal Equilibrium

This title's avoidance feature establishes an ideal equilibrium between challenge and opportunity, granting chances of triumph while endangering that very prospect at the tiniest misstep. Learn this skill, and you'll obtain not just victory, but fulfillment.
