The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.
