The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
